Are Bed Bug Bites Dangerous?

Bed bugs bites can be dangerous, irritable and frustrating. The bites leave ugly and itchy marks on the skin surface. In most cases, bugs are the cause of sleepless nights for those infested. While the bed bug bites may appear to have less visible effects, in most instances they can lead to prominent blisters leading to mental, psychological and physical distress.

According to recent research on the impact of bed bugs bites, it was found out that bed bugs do not transmit diseases. However, they have been confirmed to transmit causative agents of relapsing fever, yellow fever, tularaemia, typhus, plague, and anthrax. Furthermore, they carry at least forty pathogens such as parasitic worms, protozoa, bacteria and viruses, which adversely affect the human health. Children infested by bed bugs are mostly affected as they turn pale and listless.

Bed bug bites are a danger to the psychological health of the patients. The risks emanate from the irritation that causes lack of energy, insomnia, and stress. Most people have no idea how to prevent infestation by the bed bugs or deal with the effects of the infestation, thus leading to excessive infestation until an individual suffers from anemia. The increased vulnerability to these pests thus adds to negative thoughts, paranoia, depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Delusory parasitosis is one of the mental conditions that properly exemplify the dangers of bed bug bites. Due to the irritation, itching and the scars from the bites, some people suffering from the infestation may keep scratching themselves until they sustain secondary injuries. Delusory parasitosis patients complain of feeling the pests on their body even when they are not present. The risks can be manifested when such patients undertake extreme actions such as spraying excessive pesticides in their homes, abandoning their houses, quitting their jobs, or even discarding their furniture; whatever the source of the pests is perceived to be.

Psychological health risks are more prevalent in people suffering from secondary skin infestation resulting from the bites such as lymphangitis, ecthyma, and impetigo. Due to the depletion of energy levels, patients also suffer from stress that affects their immune system. Consequently, the lowered immunity increases the vulnerability of patients to diseases and infections. Psychological problems mostly develop from a sensitivity syndrome that is suffered by people who receive multiple bites. Due to the constant agitation and nervousness, such patients suffer from distress, stress, anaphylaxis, and risk of anemia especially if the wounds take long to heal completely. The distaste with which beg buds are regarded adds to the psychological trauma suffered by most patients.
